If you want to play better, here’s how: jump higher. Now, I’ve had a lot of experience working with athletes to improve their game, and I know that if you’re not in basketball or volleyball, you’re probably wondering how the heck jumping higher is going help you excel at your sport.
Well, it’s like this. The fundamentals of any sport are rooted in strength, endurance, speed, agility and skill. You’re pretty much on your own with skill, but all the rest are the exact same things you need to jump well. Indeed, if you wanted a quick and dirty way to test athletic skill without equipment or a lot of time, then measuring someone’s vertical is the way to go.
The same thing applies in reverse, too. If you want to train someone to be a better athlete, the most efficient way is teach them how jump higher. Actually, there are very few sports where being able to jump higher isn’t a direct asset, even aside from the way it helps your overall performance.
Basically, you should spend about eight weeks making increasing your jump a priority. You’ll need a program that has a strong grounding in working the power muscles of your legs and back, along with an emphasis on quickness and explosiveness as a goal. Along with actual jump practice, this will really help max out your athletic ability.
You also need to follow a diet that leaves you as lean as possible without compromising muscle mass, since extra weight is, well, extra weight. Focus on eating lean protein and veggies, and you’ll drop the weight. If you combine that with training you’ll have the know how. Jump higher tomorrow.
